Mia Blake wasn’t the first girl to be taken by the vampires. She is kidnapped and held prisoner by Caleb, the world’s oldest and most powerful vampire. Turned against her will, Mia must find a way to free herself from Caleb’s grip and get back to those she loves. But defeating the world’s most powerful vampire isn’t going to be easy…
Sam stood in the doorway that led from the bedroom to the bathroom, but I could tell he didn’t want to come any closer. I had the distinct feeling it was because I was a girl, and that made me wonder. Ryan didn’t care about my personal space. I was surprised he cared for me at all, after the things he’d said and done back in Mexico.
“You’re a doctor,” I said, turning to him. “How did I lose a massive vampire bite?”
Sam frowned. “How long since you Turned?”
“Since I was Turned,” I corrected him. “You’re implying that I did this to myself. Quite the opposite. I expressly asked that this not be done.” As I heard myself talking, I realized that I sounded like an entitled little bitch, but I was beyond caring.
Sam blinked. “Right. How long since you were Turned?”
“I don’t know,” I answered quietly. “A few days? Less than a week. I don’t remember a lot of it.”
“Well, the good news is you’re not going insane,” Sam said, obviously trying to lighten the mood. “Vampirity is caused by a virus. It attaches itself to your DNA, makes its way into every cell in your body, and takes over. Vampires can heal from a wound in a matter of minutes. Have you attacked anyone yet?”
“What?” I looked at him incredulously. “No. Ew! Why?”
He shook his head, seemingly pleased. “It’s just … you seem remarkably lucid for a newly infected vampire.”
“Remarkably lucid?” I echoed. “All I’ve done for the past few days is throw up, cry and bleed.”
“Thank God for that,” Sam replied. “Usually, vampires spend their first few weeks – or months – attacking everyone and everything they can.”
I cast a sidelong glance at the broken lamp and overturned bedside table in the corner and tried to appear calm and generally non–violent. “Is that what you did when you were Turned?”
He paled. He looked like an injured puppy dog.
“Sorry,” I apologized. “It’s none of my business.”
He just searched my face, as if looking for the answer to a question I didn’t know.
This is awkward.
“That’s what all vampires do,” he said quietly. “The bloodlust, it’s quite horrific.”
“Bloodlust?” I echoed. “Like being hungry?”
He stared at me like I was a freak. I shifted uncomfortably under the weight of his eyes.
“Like being a homicidal maniac,” he said, “with zero impulse control.”
“Oh,” was all I could think to say.
Mia, can you tell us a little bit about Ryan Sinclair?
Mia: You want to know about Ryan Sinclair? I’ll tell you about Ryan. *Mia flashes a fake grin at Ryan *
He’s an asshole.
* Ryan shrugs helplessly*
Speak to him yourself; you’ll see what I mean. The guy thinks he’s a god or something. He’s the bloodsucker who punched me out and threw me in a cell. He took my blood and tortured me and now he’s suddenly grown a conscience or something. He thinks I should be falling over myself thanking him for saving my life. Well, I’m a vampire now, thanks to him. I’m not thanking that bastard for Turning me.
Ryan: I was just trying to help you.
Hang on, are you guys… together?
Ryan: You can’t even say I took advantage of you, because I didn’t.
Mia: I told you he was an asshole.
How did you two meet?
Ryan: I stalked her for about a year on my boss’s orders.
Mia: Then he kidnapped me.
Ryan: Yeah, well, I’ve said sorry for that, haven’t I?
Mia: It’s a little late now.
Sorry for what?
Mia: I died. He Turned me. We escaped from Caleb’s compound. The end.
Ryan: I was going to help you escape anyway. Even before you got yourself dead.
Mia: Before you killed me, you mean.
Ryan: You jumped out of a window!
Mia: BECAUSE YOU WERE CHASING ME!
That sounds like a sensitive topic.
Mia: You think? * crosses arms defensively *
Let’s lighten things up a bit. Ryan, who would you say is Mia’s favourite person?
Ryan: Me? Okay, seriously though. I’d say… It’s a toss-up between her crazy bitch of a witch BFF Evie and her loveable but dumb boyfriend Jared.
Mia: Dumb? You’re just jealous.
Ryan: You’re probably right.
And Mia, Ryan’s favourite person?
Mia: I don’t know. The guy has no friends. Umm… the girl he met at my college orientation and tried to kill?
Ryan: Who, Clair? I never tried to kill her.
Mia: She’s a vampire now! Don’t you have to die to become a vampire?
Ryan: Well, yes, technically…
Let’s change topic! Mia, what does Ryan look like?
Mia: He’s right in front of you.
For the readers, Mia. They can’t see him.
Mia: Right, the readers. Uhh… he’s tall, six-four, maybe? Buzzed black hair. The first time I saw him I thought he might be Italian, but his eyes are blue, so I’m not sure. I haven’t asked him. He said something about Spain, maybe he’s Spanish.
Ryan: I’m Greek and Spanish. My mother was from Greece. My father was a fisherman in a little town called Alicante in Spain.
Don’t forget to add in my stunning good looks and charm.
Mia: Oh, yeah. He’s a sadistic, psychopathic vampire who also happens to be incredibly good-looking. He’ll probably kill you, but I hear some chicks dig danger.
Do you two get along?
Mia: Have you been listening to anything I’ve said?
Even since the…exciting news? I hear congratulations are in order.
Mia: Have you even read the book? No. We are not getting along.
Right. Well, thanks Mia. Your turn, Ryan. Tell us something about Mia Blake.
Mia Blake. The constant pain in my ass. She’s different; I’ll give you that. She’s a pretty little thing. (Mia rolls her eyes) Dark curls and these big blue eyes that keep accusing me of wicked things. Some of which I did. Some of which we did together. Mostly she likes to make things up about me.
Aren’t you a centuries-old vampire who enjoys torturing innocents?
So, surely Mia’s opinion of you isn’t too far off the mark?
Ryan: I’m working on it *Smiles *
Surely there must be something you like about each other. Let’s get real. Ryan, what do you love about this girl? You risked your life to save her, after all.
Ryan: *Goes quiet for a moment * I love Mia’s fire. I love her spirit. She might act like she hates me, but underneath all that bravery she knows what I did for her. And that I’m sorry that I took her. Sorrier than I’ve ever been about anything in my whole crazy life.
*Looks at Mia * You know that, right?
And you, Mia? What is it about Ryan that’s kept you with him, despite everything?
Well, apart from the obvious *raises eyebrows * I guess I’m glad that he got me out of there before I became one of Caleb’s zombie vampire army. They were going to erase my memories, you know. He got me out of there. I just wish that he’d been able to get me out alive.
Okay, lets lighten things up a bit. Ryan, what’s Mia’s favourite food?
Ryan: Cheeseburgers. And anything with blood in it that she pretends doesn’t have blood in it. Like red wine spiked with blood. Or rare steak basted in the blood of a virgin. She acts all innocent, but I can tell she knows.
Mia: I hate you so much right now.
Ryan: I love you too, babe. Now tell the nice reporter what my favourite food is.
Mia: Is it reporters?
*Interviewing reporter looks for closest exit *
Ryan: Ha ha.
Mia: I guess its blood. Right, killer?
*Ryan just smiles *
Well, I think that’s all we’ve got time for today.
Ryan: Are you sure? Because we were going to ask you to join us for dessert…
*Mia slaps Ryan’s arm *
Mia: You’re such a jerk. She’s just trying to ask us some questions, you don’t have to scare her.
Ryan: But it’s fun. Don’t you want to have some fun?
Mia: The last time I had fun with you, you know what happened.
Ryan: Yeah, You loved it.
*Interviewer takes the opportunity to sneak out of the room while Mia and Ryan continue to argue *
