Touching Fire Teaser (Isaiah’s POV)

TEASER

Isaiah’s POV

Her anxiety was a poisonous flower, bright, beautiful and lethal. Every moment it bloomed, it strangled the air around it with its toxic fumes until there was nothing to breathe but her. I ached to go to her. I ached to sooth her. I ached to push her away, to unhitch the thorns she’d borrowed into my soul, to untangle myself from the hold she had on me. But my hands
my hands were reaching, hurting with the need to touch her, to calm her with my skin. It seemed to work so I did. I touched her.

“Fallon.” My heart was in the single whisper of her name. I could feel it wrapping around each syllable like velvet. The severity of my need for her should have scared me. It should have appalled and embarrassed me, but it was her emotions now rushing over mine, blanketing them, smothering everything that should have been mine.

She was scared. I could taste the salty tang of it on my tongue. My fingers curled around her arm the way I wished I could wrap around her. I would have given my soul to hold her just then.

“I’m good!” she said, giving me a lopsided smile I knew was fake. “Just nervous.” But her eyes wouldn’t meet mine. They leapt from the two beds crammed inside the beat up motel to the dresser and the chunky TV as if everything were made of rubber.

I wanted to sigh. “We don’t have to do this today,” I told her.

She snorted, rolling her eyes. “Today. Tomorrow. What’s the difference? Might as well get it over with.”

Bravado. It never suited her. I could read her too well. I knew her concerns. I knew her fears. I knew why she was doing this and it thrummed like a physical wound.

“Fallon.” Her name
it was my lifeline. It held me, warmed me, gave me a reason to keep taking every breath. It was my prayer, but she would never know this. I could never tell her.

She laughed, elbowing me lightly. “Relax! I got this!”

I will be there! I wanted to tell her. I will protect you. I will keep you safe. I will never let anything hurt you. Each syllable was edged with razors that carved her name into the soft tissues of my esophagus as I swallowed them back, swallowed them down and buried them into the deepest recces of my soul where she would never find them. She would never know. I would die before I ever put the truth on her.

“Ready?” I asked her.

Her smile was shaky. “Is a fly ever ready to swan dive into the spider’s web?”

Again, it was on the edge of my tongue to tell her we could wait. We could postpone. But we couldn’t. I couldn’t let her. It had to happen. She had to go. It was the only way I knew how to keep her safe.
