Sea Change by Aimee Friedman

Sixteen-year-old Miranda Merchant is great at science. . .and not so great with boys. After major drama with her boyfriend and (now ex) best friend, she’s happy to spend the summer on small, mysterious Selkie Island, helping her mother sort out her late grandmother’s estate.

There, Miranda finds new friends and an island with a mysterious, mystical history, presenting her with facts her logical, scientific mind can’t make sense of. She also meets Leo, who challenges everything she thought she knew about boys, friendship. . .and reality.

Is Leo hiding something? Or is he something that she never could have imagined?

I don’t usually start a review like this, but I have a complaint and only the author can sort it out!

The ending made me want to cry! Not just because it was desperately sweet, but because it walked away with an ending that didn’t feel finished. I won’t spoil anything for anyone, but let’s just say that I wanted a pinch more. At this point, I am hoping, begging and pleading with the author to PLEASE write a sequel! Ease my suffering and tell me what happened with Leo! With Miranda’s mom. With the letters, the dress, Amelia’s father, Linda, and if Leo really is or isn’t (I won’t say what! But the author knows *grin*).

I blew through this book with the forces of a forest fire. The book is still smoking FYI. It took a few pages before I could really pull myself into the book, but once I did… no one was taking it out of my hands for nothing! I loved the moments between Leo and Miranda. I loved the build up. I loved the descriptions in the book. I loved the weaving between myth and reality. It was all so beautifully delivered. If I could change anything at all, it would be the end. But then again, if I had that power, I would just keep writing and writing… never wanting this book to end!

All that said, I will be stalking this author closely, hoping to see a Sea Change II. But should it not come to pass, I will certainly be reading other works by her for sure and I recommend Sea Change to anyone that loves a tender, summer romance.
