What No One Tells You About Writing

There’s a theory out there that once you’ve written the book and once your editor and beta readers have gone through that written book and edits have been made that that is that. The book is finished. You can slap a pretty ribbon on it and ship it off into the world. In a normal, perfect world, that is entirely true. Once those pages hit the editor’s hands and they’re returned, you can basically consider that a job well done. But what happens when you find an epic hole in your plot? What do you do?

You rewrite. You dive back into the manuscript and you rip into it and you make it as perfect as you can. You write until you’re in love with every inch of it, because anything less is an injustice to your craft, to your editor, your beta readers, and your readers. What’s the point of putting out a piece that isn’t your absolute best?

As much as it hurts my head and my heart, it’s a promise I made myself five years ago and a promise I will always keep. No matter how tempting it is to toss a half baked book out there and consider it a job well done (especially if it means getting started on a new project), I’m going back in. And when I say that, I mean I’m hitting ground zero on OFF SCRIPT. I’m ripping out the carpets and burning down the drapes. I’m not discouraged. I’m not giving up. I have my map and I’m running with it. The changes I have in mind make me that much more excited to share the story with you guys.

That said, join me on Twitter because I’m going to be announcing my progress every step of the way and on Instagram for sneak peek snap shots and teasers. I am so excited!

In other news, HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Did you dress up this year? Post your answer in the comments below.
